Rafael Nadal‘s historic 2022 ATP Tour season has come to a conclusion, and the Spaniard broke another record. The 36-year-old was chosen as Fans’ Favorite in the ATP Awards for the first time.
Nadal won his first 20 matches on the ATP Tour in 2022 despite coming off a five-month injury hiatus, which was his greatest start to a season. During that run, the Spaniard won a record-tying 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. And he added a victory on the clay at Roland Garros in June. Which took his total to 22 major titles.
“I am super happy to receive the Fans’ Favourite Award [in] 2022. It makes me feel great. I can’t thank you enough everyone for the support not only for this award, but at the same time for all the support that I receive in every single city and event around the world,” Nadal said. “That means everything to me, so I am very [much] looking forward to 2023 to share a lot of positive things again. See you soon!”
Thanasi and Nick named fans’ favourite doubles team
Nadal won ATP Tour events in Melbourne and Acapulco this season in addition to those Grand Slam victories in Australia and France. This brings his total number of tour-level victories to 92. He had a 39-8 record at the end of the season. Along with his full collection of Awards in the player-voted categories—Newcomer, Most Improved, Comeback, and Sportsmanship—the Spaniard now has an ATP Award chosen by the public. Additionally, in 2011 Nadal received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award. He also won the ATP No. 1 presented by Pepperstone title five times (2008, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019).
The announcement of Nadal’s win comes a day after Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios were named the Fans’ Favourite doubles team for the first time. A breakthrough season that saw the 19-year-old Dane win three ATP Tour championships. And make his first Top 10 appearance in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings earned him the title of Newcomer of the Year in the 2022 ATP Awards.
