Optimistic Emma Raducanu will travel to Australia for Grand Slam despite Ankle Injury

Despite taking her recovery from an ankle injury “a day at a time,” Emma Raducanu is optimistic that she will be ready for the Australian Open the following week. At the ASB Classic in Auckland’s second round against Viktoria Kuzmova, the British number one rolled her left ankle, leaving her in tears.

Ahead of her weekend trip to Melbourne, Raducanu, who had begun her campaign with a convincing victory over Linda Fruhvirtova, talked up her chances of competing in the first major of 2023 during an interview with Tennis Australia.

What did Emma Raducanu say?

“It was really unfortunate, to be honest, last week,” Raducanu said. “I was feeling great about my season and feeling really good with the preparation I did physically.

“I just had an accident on the court, which I don’t know what I could have done to prevent that, so I’m just taking it a day at a time honestly and every single day try as best as possible to see and make progress. “Hopefully by Monday or whenever the tournament starts (for me) I’ll be OK and ready but we’re just taking it a day at a time and not trying to expect too much at this point.”

Will Raducanu be fit enough before the Australian Open?

On January 16, the Australian Open will begin, and Raducanu’s team is optimistic that it was only a minor ankle strain following her fall in Auckland.

After winning the US Open in 2021 and the other grand slams, the grand slam champion had a disappointing 2022 due to a series of fitness problems that hindered her first full season on the tour. The previous season was cut short for Raducanu due to a wrist injury, but a spirited win over Fruhvirtova made sure she had a good start to the new one.
